Abstract:
A complete collection of topographic maps of all Rhode Island towns compiled by the USGS in the spring to summer 2015. These images were converted from GeoPDF into two GeoTIFF formats (GeoTIFF topographic maps with a collar containing scale and other information, and collarless GeoTIFF topographic maps) by the University of Rhode Island Environmental Data Center.

GeoPDFs converted to GeoTIFF format. Two formats created with the use of Global Mapper version 16 scripting environment, topographic maps with a collar, and topographic maps without a collar. The following steps detail how this was accomplished. First, the following script was modified from a USGS Topo GeoPDF Layers to GeoTIFF workflow. This was then run in Global Mapper version 16. This created collarless GeoTIFFs from the GeoPDFs that were downloaded from The USGS US Topo and Historical Topographic Map Collection. GLOBAL_MAPPER_SCRIPT VERSION=1.00 UNLOAD_ALL // Loop over all GeoPDF files in the directory and convert them to GeoTIFF DIR_LOOP_START DIRECTORY="." FILENAME_MASKS="*.pdf" RECURSE_DIR=NO LOAD_PROJECTION FILENAME="R:\_1_incoming_\USGS_Topo_2015\GeoPDF\RISPF.prj" IMPORT FILENAME="%FNAME_W_DIR%" TYPE=PDF CONTRAST_MODE=NONE EXPORT_RASTER FILENAME="%DIR%WC_%FNAME_WO_EXT%.tif" TYPE=GEOTIFF EXPORT_RASTER FILENAME="%DIR%%FNAME_WO_EXT%.tif" TYPE=GEOTIFF BG_TRANSPARENT=YES POLYGON_CROP_FILE="All_7.5min_cells.shp" UNLOAD_ALL DIR_LOOP_END Once the script completed; it was then necessary to remove the residual collars from the "collarless" GeoTIFFs. The residual collar results from TIFF6 transparency not being recognized by ArcMap (this is recognized in Global Mapper v16). The removal of the residual collar was accomplished by using the following procedure. 1) The Draw toolbar was used to create a polygon graphic that covered the extent of one topographic map - excluding the residual white borders. 2) This was converted to a shapefile using the "Convert Graphic to Feature" option from the Draw toolbar menu. It was necessary to open an Edit session to adjust the verticies of the polygon so that the first quad could successfully be clipped using the Clip (Raster) tool. 3) The Clip (Raster) tool was then used to clip each quad by the converted graphics. This was run for each of the 40 quads making up the Rhode Island. In each instance it was necessary to move the converted polygon graphics to a new location, and to adjust the verticies. This was all accomplished while an Edit session was in progress.
