Abstract:
Panchromatic non-georectified digital aerial photographs flown in Spring 2008 by Keystone Aerial Surveys at a map scale of 1:12,000. These images were contracted by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Office of Inspection and Compliance.
Purpose:
These photographs were originally flown to support the work of the RIDEM Office of Inspection and Compliance. RIGIS data users may find these useful as a general reference source.

Process_Description:
Panchromatic non-georectified digital aerial photographs flown in Spring 2008 by Keystone Aerial Surveys at a map scale of 1:12,000. These images were contracted by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Office of Inspection and Compliance. Prints were also scanned by Keystone and provided to RIDEM. Each of the 1,753 TIF files was approximately 500 MB large, for a grand total of 839 GB of imagery.

Paul Jordan of RIDEM provided the University of Rhode Island Environmental Data Center the scanned TIFF version of the original aerial photographs. IrfanView 4.20 batch function was used to rotate each TIFF 90 degrees to clockwise so that each image has its north orientation at the top of each image.

Global Mapper 11 was used to compress each TIF using JPEG2000 at a target compression ratio of 1:50. An aggressive compression ratio was employed because the original source files were approximately 500MB each in size. Metadata record encompassing entire collective dataset was written (no metadata for these images were provided by Keystone). Note: While the JPEG2000 version of these images are available via RIGIS, the source TIF files have been archived at URI and no plans are in place to make these large files available via RIGIS due to their size.
