  Description:
    Abstract: This layer was created by the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program as part of the 2016 Municipal Transportation Assets Vulnerable to Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge Project. The layer depicts bridges over 25 ft. in length potentially exposed to storm surge and sea level rise before 2100, based on predictions of seven feet of sea level rise for the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC). The bridge locations, and much of the attribute data, originates from a layer maintained internally by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. The scenario depicting seven feet of sea level rise plus the storm surge from a 100-year storm event, and the attendant water heights, originated with the STORMTOOLS data set created by CRMC. Other data came from the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority.
    Purpose: This layer was created by the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program as part of the 2016 Municipal Transportation Assets Vulnerable to Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge Project. The layer depicts bridges over 25 ft. in length potentially exposed to storm surge before 2100.

        Process_Description: Aerial photography was used to identify the location of the Providence Hurricane Barrier. This data was used to manually cut a copy of the STORMTOOLS vector data, creating a polygon depicting areas which could potentially be inundated by a storm surge event based on their vertical elevation, but which would likely be protected by the barrier. A field was created in the bridge layer entitled “Hurrbarr.” The polygon was used to select bridge assets by location, and selected bridge assets were coded with a “1.” Unselected assets were coded with a “0.” Assets were checked visually for accuracy.

        Process_Description: Fields "evac," "bus," and bike" were added to the bridge layer. "Select by Location" was used with a buffer of 10 ft. to find bridges within close proximity to evacuation routes. The highlighted bridges were marked with a 1 to indicate the presence of an evacuation route. The processor then manually examined the marked bridges to ensure accuracy, utilizing the attribute data from the Evacuation Route layer in combination with professional judgement. Bridges that were not highlighted, or which had been highlighted erroneously, were marked with a 0. The same process was used to identify bridges with bike and bus infrastructure, using the Bike Path layer and the Bus Route layer. The "bus" and "bike" fields were then combined into the "intermodal" field for ease of analysis.
